What is sure to be one of the lead stories on tonight's news is summed up nicely in this headline from the San Francisco Examiner:

Democrats revolt in Pelosi effort to adjourn the House

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., had to stop a revolt from her own caucus this afternoon, when 39 Democrats sided with the GOP in an effort to block the House from adjourning until mid-November.

The more than three dozen Democrats were opposed to the House quitting until they took a pre-election vote on extending the Bush-era tax cuts.

I don't mind deficit spending as much some more fiscally conservative people.. and I am pretty darn fiscally conservative compared to most folks here at dKos.

It's a very big economy and a very big government budget.. it can handle some years in the red if doing so smooths over the hard times... as long as it is spent for that. Stimulating jobs.. providing a safety net during high unemployment.. etc.

But deficit spending is not sustainable forever. That's why I've harped so much about how we are going to pay for health care going into the future. It is really important that we do not borrow to pay for an ongoing program.

In a Fox News interview(yes, I know.. but this is already being reported on radio stations here in the Chicago area) David Axelrod

said the White House doesn't want any Senate action on health care until Brown is seated.

"I think it would be inappropriate," Axelrod said. "I think the people of Massachusetts would consider it inappropriate, and that's something we won't do."

I'd like to explore some outside-the-box solutions to universal health care today. Reading ralhpdog's diary yesterday ( My daughter's tragedy: U.S. health care in a nutshell. ) was the motivation for writing this, but these are some concepts that have been noodling around in my brain for some time now.

Over the past year or so, I have come around to the fact that single-payer is probably the only really efficient solution to providing health care for all Americans. That will not happen in this Congress. So, how else can we achieve the same goal in a more politically acceptable manner?

All the rabid talk about demanding a public option and/or demanding single payer seems to ignore one of the finest health care systems in the world that has neither. Let's take a breather.. count to 10.. and take a look at arguably the most successful health care system in the world.

Dutch healthcare system 'best in Europe' in 2008

The Netherlands' healthcare system was this week rated the best in Europe by the annual Euro Health Consumer Index (EHCI). Experts believe it could serve as a model for US healthcare reform.

Before Arlen Specter changed parties, he was the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee. With Specter now being a Democrat, a procedural rule of the Judiciary Committee may come into play.

As many of you may already know, in a spirit of inclusion, the Obama's made sure yesterday's White House Easter Egg hunt was open to families of all makeups. Gay and lesbian parents were specifically invited, and many of those families decided to identify themselves by wearing rainbow-colored leis.

On Sunday, in my diary Replace Burris Now! Here's how, I opined that Burris's appointment to fill Obama's Senate seat was, by definition of the Seventeenth Amendment, a temoporary one. I further argued that it was within the purview of the Illinois State Legislature to call for a special election at any time before the regular election in 2010.

Well, it seems that the Attorney General of the State of Illinois agrees with me.

As an Illinoisan, I am mightily P.O.'d at how the whole Blagojevich/Burris affair has been handled.

From day one, I have argued that the Illinois legislature should have called for a special election. However the national Democratic Party and local Dems decided it was too risky and better to have the devil you know than the devil you don't, despite an overwhelming cry for special elections by the Illinois citizenry.

Predictably, we have the mess we are currently dealing with. Follow me below the fold for a possible solution...
